Trip idea....

So we (the TA Moto group) are meeting this Friday to discuss some ride ideas for this year. One destination is Nova Scotia, an awesome trip but not one I can make due to funds and time off. I've never stepped foot onto America's hat (Canada), I've flown over on my way to Alaska. Yesterday, I looked for the quickest way to the land of maple syrup and hockey. Looks like I can run the super slab up to Sault Ste Marie and be there in two days if I take my time. From there I can rip up Trans-Canada Highway 17 to any small town I choose. Roughly 840 miles from Indy to Terrace Bay, Ontario.

(Just using Terrance Bay as a distance marker, I don't know anything about the town.)

I have no rough idea of when this could happen. I was thinking about leaving on a Thursday, stop somewhere in Michigan and enter Canada on Friday. Head for home on Sunday.

Anyone want to take a trip to Canada? Gymi?

Sounds good to me, as long as it is after July 1st. I have a couple of friends that would probably want to make that trip as well. As long as you don't mind sharing the road with a couple of Harleys ;) I imagine with a little prodding,it wouldn't be too hard to talk Unk into that trip as well.

Cool. I'll keep you updated and I've already planted the idea on Unk's blog. =]

You'll like riding over the Mackinac bridge. It's like, 5 miles high. OK, that might be a bit of a stretch, but it's way the hell up in the air. Rode over it in a thunderstorm at night after getting run out of town by the cops for being assholes. Good times.

Maybe I should get some brown riding pants to wear my first time over that bridge. Looks like it's metal mesh too. Talk about pucker factor!

200 ft high, 5 miles long. Half concrete, half metal grates. I guess all the riding in heavy cross winds last fall was a good thing!

Yeah, I forgot to mention the mesh. The wind is a bitch up there.

I've ridden over it both drunk(see last comment) and sober & I highly recommend sober.

haha! You crazy kids!

I read about how they'll set up convoy wind blocks for riders if it's blowing pretty bad. Plus, they can cart your vehicle or bike over if you don't want to drive/ride.

I think I'll tough it out.

The best time to cross it is after five pm. The paint crews are done for the day after five. When they are painting, they close the outside lane and you have to ride the grate. Riding that grate is about the most unnerving thing I have ever done on a bike. It makes your bike wobble and you feel like your going to fall the whole time your on it. But it is only a mile long and spans the highest part of the bridge. Then about forty-five minutes after that you get to cross the bridge that spans the St. Mary’s river. It doesn’t have a grate, but is about just as high and is a double humper to boot.
